- 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 cups beef broth
- 2 cups carrots, sliced

- 3 cloves garlic, minced

- 1 bay leaf
